Mrieħel Gym: The call
A gym in Mrieħel asked us to investigate heavy mould growth inside a specific shower cubicle. The neighbour on the other side of that wall was also reporting water ingress that had worsened over recent weeks.
What we saw
We began with a visual sweep to understand finishes, fall, and where water might be creeping. Then we moved straight to thermal imaging, cubicle by cubicle, to see what the eye can’t.
The thermal clue
In the first cubicle, the wall around the shower mixer lit up with a bright thermal signature—a classic sign of hot water bleeding where it shouldn’t. The other cubicles were useful controls: they showed standard, balanced pipe runs without anomalies. Behind the target wall—where renovation works were underway—we found a distinct cold patch from evaporative cooling where water had been soaking the fabric.
Diagnosis
A hot-side leak at or near the mixer body was wetting the wall, feeding mould and migrating through to the neighbouring space.
Recommendations
- Open the wall precisely at the mixer location (we provided marked photos).
- Replace/repair mixer and joints, pressure-test, then reinstate with mould-resistant board/finishes.
- Improve cubicle ventilation to keep relative humidity down during peak hours.
